In Northern Paris there used to be a gypsum and limestone mine – essentially a big hole in the neighborhood. The area has been cleverly designed to be a public park, the Butte Chaumont, with lush green walks and a purpose-built viaduct. Along the bottom of what was originally the mine, the paths wind around streams and a lake. It is an unusual and adventurous park.
